Account book relating to the ship Mississippi and a detachment of vessels under the command of Matthew C. Perry, 1847-1853.

Manuscript account book maintained by Robert S. Rodgers, prize agent for Captain Matthew C. Perry and crew members of the ships Mississippi, Bonita, Forward, McLane, Reefer and Vixen under Perry's command. During their Mexican War expedition to Frontera, Tabasco, Laguna, and later Vera Cruz, Mexico, Perry and his men captured a number of vessels which were subsequently taken into the service of the United States by order of Commodore David Conner. Rodgers' account book contains a list of all the men on each of the ships, the vessels captured, prize monies owed by the United States to each ship, and monies he received. The volume also contains copies in Rodgers' hand of letters by Rodgers, Thomas Allen Clark, C. J. Stewart and others relating to a lawsuit regarding the disbursement of the money. Accompanied by a four-page undated fragment of a letter to an unidentified recipient regarding the case.
